Music Director: M M Kreem

Lyricist: Junaid Wasi with Panchhi Jalonvi and Piyush Mishra

Singers: Daler Mehndi, Shankar Mahadevan, Shilpa Rao, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Lahore is a recent release that has earned critical and commercial success on the box office. The album is an interesting mix of theme track, situational songs and inspirational tracks. M M Kreem has come back after a hiatus and has done no harm to his reputation here. Piyush Mishra and Panchhi Jalonvi are the guest lyricists in the movie.

The album begins with the anthem track ‘Ab Ye Kaafila’ which is about the bunch of sportspersons progressing ahead in their quest of success. The track has a smooth flow and the best part about it is that it’s not at all overly predictable and patriotic. It comes easy on ears and will make you pay attention to it. The next track is ‘Musafir’ rendered by Daler Mehnndi. It’s a soft situational track. The song has a pensive feel to it and has been repeated in the voice of M M Kreen himself.

The next track is ‘Rang De’ sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Shilpa Rao. It’s a foot-tapping number and has got Punjabi flavour to it. ‘Saaware’ has been crooned by M M Kreem. It’s a nice, sad song and the singer has given his very best to it. Up comes the longest track of the album, ‘O Re Bande’ that has a length of 8 minute. The track has Sufi feel to it and it has been sung by talented duo of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shilpa Rao.

The album ends with ‘Lahore – Theme’ that has an international appeal to it. It’s a classy music and has been composed by Wayne Sharpe. Overall, Lahore is a decent album that could have found more takers had enough promotion had been done of the album.

Houseful is the upcoming venture of Sajid Khan of ‘Heyy Baby’ fame. Movie stars Akshay Kumar and Ritiesh Deshmukh. The music has been composed by Shankar Mahadevan-Ehsaan Noorani-Loy Mendonsa and lyricists are Sameer and Amitabh Bhattacharya. An array of talented singers like Loy, Tarun Sagar, Alyssa Mendonsa, Neeraj Shridhar, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Ritu Pathak, Mika Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sajid Khan, Arun Ingle, Shabbir Kumar and Vivinenne Pocha etc have rendered their voices for the movie.

Composer trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have done very well in recent times. In this album, there are five originals tracks and three remixes. The album also has the flavour of 1980s with the inclusion of an old song of Amitabh Bachchan, “Apni toh jaise taise” and popular singer of the same era, Shabbir Kumar.

The album begins with “Oh girl you are mine” rendered by Loy Mendonsa and his daughter Alyssa along with Tarun Sagar. A romantic song in nature, it has soothing harmonica sounds and soft percussions. As is the wont of S-E-L, the number has an urban and hip touch to it. There is a remixed version of the same song that is quite suitable for the dance parties. The next number is “Papa jag jayega” crooned by Ritu Pathak, Neeraj Sridhar and Alyssa. This is a situational number with dash of fun and humour. Not exactly a great song, this can still be heard once.

The next number is “Aapka kya hoga (dhanno)” sung by Mika Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan and Sajid Khan. The song is a makeover of Amitabh Bachchan’s popular track “Apni to jaise taise” from the 1981 film “Lawaaris”. The song has got good potential of being a hit.

“I don’t know what to do” marks the comeback of famous singer Shabbir Kumar after so many years. The track is quite entertaining and Sunidhi Chauhan has provided good support to the lead singer. The album ends with a song called “Loser” with Vivinenne Pocha and Amitabh Bhattacharya behind the mike. All in all, the album has got good potential to make cash register ringing.

Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge was one of the first movies of 2010 to do decent business on the box office. The movie stars ever so reliable Ajay Devgn, super talented Konkona Sen and versatile actor Paresh Rawal. The movie belonged to comedy and drama genre and along with commercial success, it also tasted critical acclaim. Interestingly, most of the recent movies of Ajay Devgan were in comedy genre and they all have done good business. Remember, Golmaal series and All The Best? This movie has been directed by Ashwani Dhir and the music department has been handled by troika of Pritam, Amit Mishra and Vishal Bhardwaj. Irshad Kamil has penned down the lyrics.

The album begins with ‘Aaja Aaja’ sung by Raghubir Yadav, Ajay Jhingran and Rajneesh. This one is the title song and the singers have managed to maintain the balance throughout the song. The song also has some interesting comic instances and dialogues that make it even more effective. The second song is the remixed version of same song ‘Aaja Aaja’. A complete dance number this one is.

The next number is ‘Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge’ sung by Amit Mishra who is also the composer of the song. The number has desi tune and western beats. A humming number basically, it has been composed in an interesting way. ‘Dohay’ is the next track and it has a serious and sober tune. The lyrics are meaningful and the chorus is effective.

The next track is ‘Jyothi Jalaile’, sung by talented Sukhwinder Singh and composed by Vijay Bhardwaj. This one is more like a parody of ‘Beedi’ song from Omkara. You get the feeling that singer is singing it at a temple or a pooja gathering. No doubt, the song is very lively. The last number of the album is ‘Sukh Karta’ that is more like a prayer. All in all, an okay album that you can try once.

Director: Leena Yadav

Lyrics: Irfan Siddique, Asif Ali Beg and Ajinkya Iyer

Music: Salim Merchant and Sulaiman Merchant

‘Teen Patti’ has created some buzz in tinsel town because of its casting coup of bringing together two legends of cinema; Amitabh Bachchan and Sir Ben Kingsley. Teen Patti is a gambling ‘n’ grilling ‘edge-of-the-seat’ thrilling entertainer directed by Leena Yadav who had earlier showed her talent in ‘Shabd’. The music of the movie has been composed by talented duo of Salim and Suleiman. The musical scores definitely give clue about what to expect from this ‘dark noir feel’ movie. The background score is haunting and enticing.

The first track of the album ‘Neeyat Kharab Hai’ sets the album on fire. The number has jazzy tunes and appears deceptively alluring. Sunidhi Chauhan has proficiently handled this song that has volatile flows. Lyrics by Irshad Siddique lend adequate weight to the vocal prowess of Sunidhi.

Same song also has a remixed version of it and Abhijit Vaghani has done a great job here. Full of energy, remixed version of ‘Neeyat Kharab Hai’ has adequate glamour quotient.

’Intezar Mein Chupa Kahi’ is more of a composition in rock-beat arrangement. Naresh Kamath has effectively made use of his booming baritones in this enthralling background score. Remixed version of this song will find takers among the rock lovers but definitely it is not the finest one in this genre.

The title track ‘Teen Patti Ke Ghulam’ is more of an average number sung by Salim himself. However the remixed version of the title track will definitely push up the tempo. The remix is more of disco-beat filler.

‘Life is a game’ is all about powerful voice of Big B. It has tangy English lyrics that have been made special by Amitabh Bachchan’s deep-throated baritones. This song has another version of it in the voice of Anoushka Manchanda and Sonia Saigal. The last offering of the album is ‘Summertime’ that looks more like a song designed to please international audiences.

All in all, the album loyally sticks to the theme of the movie. All the songs are in situational mould and will suit the mood of the viewers while watching the movie.

When it comes to movies directed by Karan Johar, every aspect pertaining to the movie is larger than life. Add to the film, magical combo of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol and you start expecting signs of grandeur. Emotions are the backbone of all the movies of KJo. Remember his tear jerkers like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna? His latest offering ‘My Name is Khan’ has expectations of entire industry pinned on it. After the December’s blockbuster from another reigning Khan, 3 Idiots, this movie promises to be the harbinger of good times for Bollywood.

My Name is Khan bring together one of the most successful pairs of bollywood, yes, we are talking about Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. The film has been set in the backdrop of USA and seems quite different from previous KJo’s movies. Film’s theme revolves around prevalent ethnic disparities in the USA post 9/11. The music has been composed by Karan’s favorite troika Shankar-Loy-Ehsaan.

Music of the movie has mixed flavors of Sufism, melody and emotion. The album begins with ‘Sajda’ sung ever so beautifully by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shankar Mahadevan and Richa Sharma. The song will definitely not give you a feeling of newness yet its passion and poetic adulation will surely impress you.

Adnan Sami, Shankar Mahadevan and Shreya Ghosal have joined together for the next track ‘Noor-e-Khuda’. The song will move you by the sheer force of its profound and desperate pleas. All the three accomplished singers have given their best and song is sure to carve its niche. Ustad Rashid Khan’s has also added further value to the song. He is simply captivating while chanting Allah Hi Rahem.

‘Tere Naina’ has been made beautiful by the voice of Shafqat Amanat Ali. The composition is just brilliant despite the ordinary lyrics. ‘Rang De’ is full of spirit, punch and zest. Shankar Mahadevan does not normally let you down.

The theme of the movie has been composed by Pakistan’s popular rock group, Strings. The theme is enchanting and dramatic just the way film is supposed to be. All in all, songs of ‘My Name is Khan’ are no revolution yet immensely likeable.

Director: Chandan Arora

Lyrics: Jeetendra Joshi, Prashant Ingole, Nitin Raikwar, Swanand Kirkire, Gulzar and Blaaze

Music: Shailendra Barve, Amit Trivedi, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Swanand Kirkire, Vishal Bhardwaj and Blaaze

Striker is actually a crime fiction tale about carom player (Siddarth). The movie is supposedly based on a true story and has been fictionalized in the underbelly of Mumbai city. Striker failed to get a decent opening because of perhaps, low promotion and absence of any major profile. The movie was anticipated in certain quarters because of comeback of Siddarth who had managed to win many admirers with his performance in blockbuster ‘Rang de Basanti’.

Talking about music of the movie, it boasts of no less than six different composers the likes of which include Shailendra Barve, Vishal Bhardwaj, Amit Trivedi, Blaaze, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Swanand Kirkire. The album begins with vocal delights of Sonu Nigam’s enriching voice in ‘Cham Cham’. Music has been composed by Shailendra Barve who is known for his prowess over instrumentals. Song has a Sufi flavour it does manage to impress you.

Amit Trivedi has crafted composition for the next song, ‘Bombay Bombay’ that has Prashant Ingole and Siddharth behind the mike. It is more like a narrative background score. Music is just secondary here and it does have the feel to be liked by the listeners.

Up next is ‘Haq Se’ sung by Yuvan Shankar Raja who is a famous music personality in Tamil film industry. More of an offbeat composition, Yuvan has rendered his peculiar baritones to this experimental number. Song conveys dreams and ambitions of the lead protagonist.

‘Maula’ is the next number that has a feel of racy contemporary Sufi Qawwali. Song gives the lyricist Swanand Kirkire ample opportunity to showcase his vocal strength. Vishal Bhardwaj is next with his soothing ad compassionate voice in ‘Yun Hua’. Lyrics will definitely strike you and no prizes for guessing the name of the lyricist. Yes, it’s again the magical combo of Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar.

‘Pia Saanvara’ has been sung beautifully by Sunidhi Chauhan in low octaves. A soft number, it is more like a feel good song with elements of classic music in it. The album finishes with ‘Aim Lagaa’ by Blaaze. A typical Blaaze number that has elements of rap and hip-hop. All in all, the album definitely has some quality and the talented ensemble of composers lend it a ‘different’ touch.

What usually happens when Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar come together for a movie? Well, magic is the word that comes to our mind. Remember, their association in Omkara and Kaminey? Both movies had wonderful music and listeners could not have enough of the powerful duo. To make your music wishes come true, they have come together again for the movie ‘Ishqiya’ and needless to say, the tracks of the album are outstanding. Movie has been directed by Abhishek Chaubey whereas Vishal Bhardwaj has produced and composed music for the album.

Ishqiya stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan. Music lovers are forced to marvel at the soundtrack of the movie and it is surely going to stay with you for a long time. The pick of the album is undoubtedly ‘Dil toh Bacha hai’. The moment you hear it in the soulful voice of Rahet Fateh Ali Khan, you will yearn for more. It has magnificent lyrics and one has never seen Rahet Fateh Ali performing below expectations. He is in top form here.

On the other end there is Ibn-E-Batuta, truly a firecracker of a song. Singers Mika and Sukhwinder singh have got it all right with their combination. Track is full of energy and will make you ‘jhoom’ into an entertaining territory.

Rekha Bhardwaj has done no harm to her image by singing some of the magnificent songs in recent times. Vishal Bhardwaj gets the best out of her and here again; she has done a terrific job in ‘Ab Mujhe Koi’. The slowness of the song is addictive and spirals around the listeners.

Rekha has done another number ‘Badi Dheere Jali’ that has mix of classical as well as fusion. Lyrics are mesmerizing and Rekha will sure leave you wanting for more. Album also has one remix of Dil To Bachcha Hai and two for Ibn-E-Batuta.

There is no denying the fact that Gulzar gives his best to Bhardwaj and the silent winners are we listeners who get to hear such beautiful songs. Go grab this album!

It’s an age old formula to interestingly use melody and make Hindi movies a great hit. Indians are highly inclined towards music. A single track melody from the rustic rural set up has a great effect on the audience. Using fusion is certainly helping, like in case of Billu the music interplayed between rustic tones and also included an upbeat number with Priyanka doing the grooves.

Sometimes peppy and comical numbers does much to lift a movie. The Sridevi starrer of Chalbaaz which has the song ‘Gudbad hogiyi – Seeti baj gayi’ went very well with the audience. A similar track from Ek Duje ke liye was the lift song. Here the lyrics and reaction mattered and is still a favorite among the audience. Hence there is nothing fixed about the audience’s appreciation. The recent track ‘All is well’ is hummed by all people, young and old.

Many movies in the past have been famous for their ghazal or intense songs. The songs from Arth or the songs from Aandhi have been a great hit. In fact people relate a particular picturisation or a song rendering and link the same to the movie. This happens in the case of Silsila too. Audience actually love actors singing their own songs like the title song of Chandni wherein Sridevi sang her own song or Nila Asman sung by Amitabhji and also the ruckus filled lyrics of Munnabhai sung by Sanjay Dutt.

In the yesteryears the songs typically dramatized as ‘running around the trees’ were remarkable and now are replaced by plush indoor settings and lavish club sets. There is more accentuation on mixing, recording and shooting. The Bhangra fever is still a super hit in all Hindi movies, be it the ‘Bhutnike’ song or the ‘Dil bole Hadippa’ numbers. A certain connection is certainly about the movies though one cannot standardize the audience demand and growing tastes.

The trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is associated with breezy numbers and they are real good at what they do. Their latest offering is Karthik Calling Karthik and music of the album is easy on ears. Movie stars Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone and is soon going to be released.

The album begins with ‘Hey Ya’ rendered by singer trio of Shankar, Loy and Clinton Cerejo. Song is a good, soft fun and is quite refreshing. Lyrics have a fused flavor of hinglish, rap and what not. Vocals do the trick.

Shankar along with Alyssa Mendonsa has sung next track of the album, ‘Uff Teri Ada’. Quite a good dance track this one is. Alyssa has done a great job whereas Shankar never gives you a reason to complain. Next number is a ballad sung by KK. Song ‘Jaane Ye Kya Hua’ is good on the ears and here KK has tried experimenting a bit with his voice.

The talent of Kailash Kher once again comes to the fore with ‘Kaisi Hai Ye Udaasi’. Sukanya Purayastha is accompanying him on the microphone. Kailash Kher has sung in a very intense way whereas Sukanya has done well too.

The theme song of the album is ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ that has intriguing lyrics and asserted phone sounds. Music is definitely typically Shankar-Eksaan-Loy-ish. Next up is ‘Karthik 2.0’ performed and composed by the Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale. Track is very much original has interesting use of guitar works. Typically a signature tune that should appeal to the listeners.

The album also has obligatory remixed stuffs of KCK remix, Hey Ya and Uff Teri Ada. All in all, Karthik Calling Karthik is not exceptional but yeah, it’s pleasing and one can surely give it a try.
